The USCIS has announced that it will issue receipt notices for the N-400, Application for Naturalization, that will extend the applicant’s lawful permanent resident (LPR or green card) status by 24 months. Beginning December 12, 2022, anyone who files a Form N-400 will receive a receipt notice that will serve as a 24-month extension of the person’s LPR status, including for travel and I-9 purposes. Therefore, applicants filing Form N-400 will not need to file Form I-90 to extend their green card while their Form N-400 is pending.

The extension will apply to all applicants who file Form N-400 on or after December 12, 2022. LPRs who filed for naturalization prior to December 12 will not receive a Form N-400 receipt notice with the extension.
